The Red Wing city council has passed a resolution saying anyone that violently attacks a police officer will be charged with a hate crime. Roger Pohlman the chief of police in Red Wing said “They are targeting not the person but the position and the authority”.
Red Wing is the second city to pass such a resolution. They hope they can be a model for other cities to pass legislation in light of the recent violent attacks on police officers around the country. Pohlman homes that something can ideally be passed at the federal level.
“The national Fraternal Order of Police is looking at federal legislation that would make it a hate crime to attack law enforcement,” he said.
